In my family home (an estate mansion secluded away on a few acres of woodland) we discover a hidden door behind the shelves by the fireplace. The whole assembly swings away from the wall, revealing an arched stone entryway that leads down to a secret basement below the house. We have discovered the long-hidden workshop of my famously eccentric inventor uncle. The workshop is well appointed with large work surfaces and cabinets of elaborate instruments. Bell jars and brass utensils and bewildering mechanisms. To one side we find an inventory of his inventions: blueprint sketches on large sheets of paper under glass. The first is a diagram of a waterwheel for a grain mill. In the centre, surrounding the axis, is a beautiful ornamentation of a fox’s head. As we search through the plan chest drawers we discover many sketches, and all feature the fox’s head adornment. My uncle has simply taken hundreds of existing inventions and applied foxwork ornamentation to their surfaces. This, we begin to realise, is the sum of his enterprise.
